The Proteas lost the previous match held at Newlands on Wednesday rather convincingly as they slumped 124 runs short of the visitor’s total of 303/6 which came of yet another masterstroke from captain Virat Kohli who made an unbeaten 160, his second of the series and his 34th in ODIs overall.

The hosts have had no answer to India’s wrist spin duo, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav who have taken 21 of the 28 South African wickets to fall this series. On the flip side, the visitors have been hardly troubled by home side’s attack, losing just 11 wickets in the three matches played so far.

Teams

South Africa

The Proteas are set to receive a massive boost with the return of star batsman AB de Villiers who is likely to return from a finger injury which sidelined him for the first three matches. He could see himself taking the gloves in Quinton de Kock’s absence with Heinrich Klaasen, who made his debut in Cape Town, making way.

The former captain could also skipper the side once again, taking over from Aiden Markram who’s inexperience has been exposed in the two matches he has been left in charge.

Farhaan Behardien is the only unused player in the series so far and could benefit if a chop and a change or two is deemed necessary given the failings of the batting unit and the form he brings in from the recently concluded Momentum One Day Cup.

India

It’s been a near-perfect series for the visitors with no glaring failures nor injury concerns in their camp. Although Kohli is a fan of the “horses for courses” approach when it comes to team selection, he might be tempted to keep the same XI which has done the job in the last two matches.

Weather forecast
Johannesburg will experience a warm overcast day with a threat of showers late in the day. Temperatures are expected to peak at 24 degrees Celcius.

There’s an 80% chance of rain which could disrupt the game towards late afternoon.

Pitch
The Wanderers pitch came under the microscope when these two sides last met there in the third and final match of the Test series.

It was declared “poor” by the ICC and another less-than-favourable score could see one of SA’s premier cricket venues starved of international contests for at least a year.

The ground staff will no doubt be wary of that and will likely prepare a firm, flat surface which could be a batting delight.
