The latest figures as released by Crime Stats SA. Crime Stats SA released the latest figures for crime according to each province, with data collected from April 2017 to March 2018. Seeing as crime has to be reported at the nearest police station to where the incident took place, this gives an accurate view of the crime stats for each province.
The data, collected from approximately 1,140 police stations across the country, shows that the areas affected the most are Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal.
This comes as no surprise as crime is linked to population numbers, and these provinces have the most populous metro areas across all of South Africa.

South Africa’s crime stats by province:-
Gauteng reported a number of 620 445 incidents for 2018, placing Johannesburg as the most affected area with 26,861, followed by Honeydew with 23,922, and Pretoria Central with 19,937.
Other areas on the top 10 list include Hillbrow, Sunnyside, Sandton, Midrand, Kagiso and Dobsonville.
A shocking amount of 121 749 sexual offences were recorded across Gauteng, with 4,462 cases of murder reported and 480 176 cases of common assault.
The data shows a decrease of approximately 6,000 reported cases from 2017.
A total number of 492 956 cases of crime were recorded for Western Cape, with murder making up 3,729 for 2018, followed by 81,964 cases of sexual offences.
Cape Town Central was the most affected, with 34,146 of incidents reported in this region, followed by Mitchell’s Plain with 28,676 incidents, and Kraaifontein with 20,919. Other areas on the top 10 list include Nyanga, Delft, Stellenbosch, Worcester, Belville, Milnerton and Mfuleni.
As for common assault, 38,579 cases were reported, with common robbery following at 12,003 for 2018. Overall, the total number of crime incidents in Western Cape dropped with approximately 7,000 since 2017.
In KZN, 351 207 cases of crime were reported. Out of that, only 4,382 were murder; approximately 300 more than reported during 2017. Sexual offences also increased by almost 300, with a total number of reported cases coming to 8,759.
Common robbery in KZN decreased slightly from 2017, with a total of 6,596 reported cases, but a shocking 21,543 instances of robbery with aggravating circumstances were reported.
Durban Central is affected the most, with nearly 26,000 cases reported, followed by Pinetown with 16,657 and Phoenix with 16,610. Other areas on the top 10 most dangerous places include Umlazi, Plessislaer, Inanda, Chatsworth, Empangeni, Kwadukuza, and Pietermaritzburg.

Out of the province’s 203 977 reported cases of crime, East London is at the top of the list with 13,812, followed by Mount Road with 11,635 and Humewood with 9,947.
Cases of common robbery decreased with approximately 300 since 2017 while drug-related crime increased with about 800 cases.
Limpopo had a total number 129 578 cases reported during 2018, approximately 1,600 less than 2017. Out of that, 12,415 cases were reported in Seshego, followed by 12,142 in Polokwane and 11,259 in Mankweng.
Other areas of interest include Thohoyandou, Mahwelereng, Tzaneen, Lebowakgomo, Westernburg, Giyani, and Bela Bela, with only 5,358.
The province’s stats decreased from 2017, with 124,849 cases reported, of which Witbank was the worst affected with 19,701, followed by Nelspruit with 13,179 and Middleburg with 11,953.
Sexual offences were at an all-time low with 3,192 reported cases, along with common robbery at 2,538 cases.
Other areas on the list include Vosman, Ermelo, Kwamlanga, Embalenhle, Piet Retief, Kabokweni and Standerton.
A total number of 119 523 cases were reported for 2018, out of which 18,722 took place in Rustenburg, followed by Potchefstroom with 12,057 and Klerksdorp with 9,471.
Other areas to make the top 10 list include Brits, Ikageng, Mafikeng, Boitekong, Jouberton, Mmabatho and Lichtenberg.
With 112 177 cases reported for Free State for 2018, the province is showing steadily decreased incidents over the past nine years, with 140 367 cases reported in 2009, 135 393 cases during 2013, and 118 298 cases reported during 2017.
Park Rand (20,454), Welkom (11,187), and Thabong (7,869) are the most affected, followed by Bethlehem, Bloemspruit, Phuthaditjhaba, Kagisanong, Zamdela, Harrismith and Botshabelo. Additional stats can be viewed here.
Northern Cape is the safest province in the country, with only 49,570 reported cases for 2018. Sexual offences and attempted murder are at an all-time low with only 1,476 cases, and 471 cases reported, respectively.
With 13,283 incidents, Kimberly is the most affected, followed by Galeshewe with 5,956 and Upington with 4,418. Other areas affected by crime include Roodepan, Kuruman, Mothibistad, Kathu, Rosedale, Potmasburg, and Hartwater.
